Interviewees
Aside from extensive research through Graham's (and other value investors') extensive published works, there was a significant journalistic element to the project. The author held interviews with Benjamin Graham, Jr., MD, the late Marjorie Graham Janis (Graham's first daughter), Irving Kahn (who, aside from being a personal friend of Graham's is, at 106 years old, the oldest finance professional on Wall Street), billionaire value investor Charles Brandes (who learned directly from Graham), and, of course, Graham's most renowned disciple, his former student, employee, and dear friend, Warren Buffett. Most of these interviews were conducted face-to-face.

Mr. Carlen also attended the annual Value Investor Conference in Omaha, Nebraska to obtain direct insights on the modern application of Graham's methods from such luminaries as Pat Dorsey, Tom Russo, Robert Hagstrom, and even international value fund managers from such countries as France, Japan, and India. On the personal level, aside from Graham's direct progeny, the author also interviewed two of Graham's grandchildren (Charlotte Janis Reiter and Pi Heseltine), his first cousin Rhoda Gerard Sarnat and her late husband Dr. Bernie Sarnat (who, aside from being investors with Graham, were also his Beverly Hills neighbors during the early years of Graham's semi-retirement), the late finance academic Professor Fred Weston, and others who knew Graham personally.
The combination of extensive written research and interview materials has produced an engaging and highly informative portrait of Graham and the profitable application of his most essential concepts.
